The Bruin

Moving slowly, always alone, solitary being.
Five foot tall and three hundred pounds,
he can lift a wheel off a truck,
he can wrestle a bull.
Some say he once delivered a child
in a snow storm, when a car left the road.

He saunters along, one foot a bit twisted.
Listening is not his strong suit,
you might have to yell.
He can't see very well,
but he can smell you coming a long way off.
He's always sniffing the air.

He sits in the bar with a long cool beer.
He smiles at children but doesn't say much.
He stays in his basement
for most of the winter,
smoking cigars,
drinking fine scotch,
listening to Tom Waits
on his old record player.

  1. He sounds like a formidable and interesting character! It might be enjoyable to bring him some beer and listen to some Tom Waits with him.

  2. Interesting character on paper. Would have probably perceived as a bit strange if I met him on the road.

    1. Yes, you meet many strange people on a country road. Don’t stop.
      Thank you.

  3. Intriguing character. I wonder how he manages to smell you coming from such a distance. Very likely to be perceived as strange.

    1. It’s funny how often I find myself sniffing the air. There is so much to smell. Try it. It’s fun.

  4. The Bruin is a term for a bear in folklore. We have quite a few around here, black bears, and their sense of smell is astounding. And if you observe one quite often they are sniffing the air.

  5. he lives both of and not of his world. that's why bruins show up so often in folklore and such. you've captured him here in his human form.
